Ocean Enterprise Collective e.V. (OEC) has released Ocean Enterprise v1.5, the latest version of its free, open-source data exchange technology for organisations building and operating AI ecosystems and data spaces.
Behind Ocean Enterprise is a simple idea: critical data infrastructure should be open, accessible and independent of any single vendor. As a non-profit association, OEC develops technology that organisations can use, contribute to and build on without any one company owning or controlling it.
Ocean Enterprise v1.5 — Key Features
Ocean Enterprise v1.5 reflects months of hands-on research, development and testing. The release builds on the success and learning of Ocean Enterprise v1.0 and continues to focus on what organisations need to build and run sovereign and sustainable data and AI ecosystems: stronger security, easier interoperability, reliable compliance and the ability to scale without adding unnecessary complexity. Exciting new features and capabilities include:
Access controlled data spaces
Ocean Enterprise now enables data spaces where access to the marketplace is restricted to authenticated and authorised participants. Instead of allowing anyone with a Web3 address to connect, organisations can determine who is allowed to enter and use the data space.
Access can be managed centrally by the data space operator or through a federated model, where participating organisations manage their own users. This gives companies direct control over the user lifecycle, including onboarding new users and removing access when people leave or change roles, while reducing the administrative burden on the data space operator.
For enterprises, this provides a stronger security and governance layer around shared data and services, making the marketplace better suited to controlled business environments and multi-organisation data spaces.

Account Abstraction
Account Abstraction gives organisations greater control over the Web3 credentials used to operate within a data space. Private keys can now remain securely managed within the company environment, while authorised users can perform transactions without seeing, storing or exporting those keys themselves.
This addresses an important enterprise security concern associated with browser-based wallets, where private keys can be accessible to individual users. By keeping key management under company control, organisations can manage access through their existing user processes and reduce the risk associated with credentials remaining in the hands of former or unauthorised users.
The new approach also creates a smoother marketplace experience. Users can carry out authorised transactions without having to approve each individual action through a browser wallet.

User Management Package
User Management Package is a Docker Compose-based deployment and provides the identity and access management capabilities required to manage users, SSI credentials, and web3 wallet credentials within a data space.
Rather than installing and connecting these components individually, organisations can deploy and configure them together using a Docker Compose-based setup. This significantly reduces the work required to prepare a new participant or operator environment and makes onboarding organisations into an Ocean Enterprise data space more straightforward.

Compute-to-Data (C2D) Upgrades — Storage & Queuing
Ocean Enterprise v1.5 introduces new options for managing Compute-to-Data jobs and their results, improving operational flexibility, automation, and resource utilisation.
Storage. Compute-to-Data results can now be stored outside the node on which the job runs. Results can be delivered to external storage such as S3 buckets, HTTP endpoints or FTP storage. This makes it easier to integrate C2D results into existing company workflows and automated processes. Results can also be encrypted before being exported, giving organisations greater control over where outputs are stored and how they are subsequently processed.

Queuing. Compute jobs can now be placed in a queue when the resources required to run them are temporarily unavailable. Instead of immediately rejecting a job, the system can wait for the necessary compute capacity to become available and start the job once those resources are released. This improves the use of available compute infrastructure and provides a more reliable experience for users, particularly in environments where multiple jobs compete for the same processing resources.

Multi Currency Support
The Ocean Enterprise Marketplace can now work with multiple supported currencies instead of requiring the entire marketplace to operate with a single currency.
Participants can use different supported currencies for assets, while users receive a clear breakdown of the amounts payable in each currency.
This gives organisations greater commercial flexibility when operating within the same data space and makes it easier to accommodate participants with different pricing requirements. The marketplace calculates and presents the amounts required in each supported currency; but it does not automatically perform foreign-exchange conversion between them.
Multi Node Support (Catalogue & Publishing)
Ocean Enterprise marketplaces can now work with multiple OE Nodes rather than relying on a single node. Assets from different nodes can be brought together in one marketplace catalogue, while publishers can select the node through which their assets are made available.
This allows workloads to be distributed across multiple nodes and gives participating organisations greater control over the infrastructure used for their data and compute services.
Participants can also operate their own nodes and publish assets through them. This means sensitive data can remain within infrastructure controlled by its owner, including when it is used in Compute-to-Data jobs.
For multi-organisation data spaces, multi-node support provides a more scalable and distributed operating model while strengthening data sovereignty: participants can contribute to a shared marketplace without giving up control over where their data is stored, accessed or processed.

Gaia-X aligned SSI
In alignment with existing Gaia-X standards, OEv1.5 SSI functionality provides:
- Gaia-X Participant Credential exchange as reaction to a presentation request to consume any data or other digital service
- Checking Gaia-X Participant Credentials of the consumer for ABAC, based on custom dynamic policies of the publisher (generated through a policy Wizard Interface)
- Validation of Participant Credentials against Gaia-X Digital Clearing Houses (GXDCH)
- Holding Gaia-X Participant Credentials in the open-source wallet of walt.id
- Presenting and Checking Gaia-X Credentials as basis for compliant data exchange
